Mary Cooke, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, passed away on October 18, 2026, at the age of 101, leaving behind a legacy of dignity, duty, and humor. Born in Wayne, Pennsylvania, on April 15, 1925, Mary lived a long and remarkable life. She was a woman of strong character, a quick wit, and a spirited determination that remained with her until her final moments.
Mary was the daughter of Henry Peters, born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, who worked as a trolley driver, and Mary Horan, her much-revered mother, who was born in County Mayo, Ireland. One of six sisters, Mary grew up alongside Geraldine, Alice, Catherine, Joan, and her youngest sister, Pat, who survives her. She was also predeceased by her baby brother, Henry. Mary spoke of her childhood with deep fondness and recounted the years with her sisters with palpable joy – especially the summers spent at their rental apartment in Wildwood, NJ.
Mary grew up in Philadelphia and raised her family in the Northeast in a simple, meticulously kept brick row home. She was a Philly girl through and through – her stories were a living time capsule of life in the city. She often recounted her years commuting downtown on the bus and the El (in the rain and snow!), going to Wanamaker's for the Christmas show and even the time her father woke the girls up before dawn to walk ten blocks down Broad Street to see the elephants from the circus unloading off the train. She was an avid bowler (160 average), an active member of the local senior center, and could often be found with her best friend Leanna playing penny slots in Atlantic City.
Mary took great pride in her work ethic and held many jobs beginning as a young girl. She worked as a waitress, at SEPTA, in insurance and accounting, and at the height of her career, she was employed as an executive secretary at Rohm and Haas in Philadelphia, a position she held with distinction until retirement.
For 14 years, Mary resided at Ann’s Choice in Warminster, Pennsylvania, where she enjoyed playing pinochle with her friends. She became known as the best pinochle player at Ann’s Choice, a reputation she earned while serving as scorekeeper and club organizer. Those who played against her knew they had some serious competition. Mary lived independently until she was 99 years old.
In her final years, Mary was a resident of Yardley, PA, where she was surrounded by wonderful caregivers who became like family to her: Kerry Dixon, Nathalee Tolbert, Elizabeth Pantoja, Valerie Bennish, and Carla Lodge. Their warmth, grace, friendship, and selfless care brought comfort and joy to her days. Mary was an avid Bingo player and lived to holler “BINGO”! Her spunk, sense of humor, and self-determination were admired by all who knew her.
Mary was the mother of Denise Baird and Jim Cooke, and mother-in-law to Karen Cooke. She was a beloved grandmother to Brittany and Keegan Baird, whom she helped raise, as well as Chris, Jennifer, and Megan Cooke. She was an Aunt to numerous nieces and nephews. She was a great-grandmother to five great-grandchildren, with two additional great-grandchildren through marriage.
Mary will be remembered for her independent spirit, her honest and direct nature, her steadfastness, her attention to detail, her unrelenting humor, her competitive streak, the way she never forgot to think of others and never failed to show up for those she loved. She leaves behind a family who will remember her with unwavering love, along with many others whose lives she touchedover the years.
